The different types of Greek Cuisine offer a great and varied selection, influenced by many countries and traditions as well as being infused with Greece’s own traditional heritage and culinary experimentation. A lot of people aren’t aware of how exciting and tasty Greek food can be despite its influence is everywhere, so if you are a Greek food fanatic or simply interested in broadening your palette; there are plenty of variations to check out!

For those unsure of what Greek food is all about, or anyone who is interested in starting out with delicious, easy-to-prepare meals, I would suggest you begin with the traditional Grecian style of cooking. Dishes using feta, potatoes, and filo pastry are staples in Greek dishes. A lot of Greek flavors change with turning seasons so you’re sure to always have something new and exciting to try.

For simpler dishes, delve into Macedonian recipes. Originating from 20th Century Greek refugees, it fuses traditional Middle-Eastern tastes with basic Greek ingredients. Main dishes include olives, pita, and seafood soups and stews. Perfect for the more timid or cautious food explorer.

In true Roman form, Byzantine Greek food is the lavish fusion of ancient Italian and Greek flavors. Extravagant dishes of fruits, sweetmeats and omelets are common in Byzantine cuisine, so if you're feeling like putting on a show; an ancient upper-class banquet could be your number one way to impress.

Jumping back into more modern times, Cretan cuisine offers a lighter option with a healthy abundance of fish, grain and fruits. Focussing more on the power of aromatic herbs and spices to define their dishes, the people of Crete have been proven to live exceptionally long and healthy lives due to the high monounsaturated fat content of their diet! There is certainly a lot to be learned from Cretan cuisine.
